A man in Senegal received six years in prison under the country's new anti-LGBTQ+ law. This is the first known conviction since the law became stronger earlier this year.

The court in Pikine-Guédiawaye made the ruling near the capital city Dakar. The case shows how quickly authorities are using the new penalties.

Senegal made its anti-LGBTQ+ laws much tougher in recent months. The West African country increased prison sentences for same-sex relationships.

Before the changes, people could face up to five years in prison. Now the maximum sentence is ten years behind bars.

The new law also targets people who promote LGBTQ+ rights or activities. Activists and supporters can face the same harsh penalties as before.

Senegal is a mainly Muslim country with conservative views on sexuality. Most people there do not accept LGBTQ+ relationships or identities.

The government said the stronger laws protect traditional family values. Officials claim they are responding to what most citizens want.

LGBTQ+ rights groups criticized the tougher penalties when they passed. They warned the laws would lead to more persecution and fear.

This first conviction proves their concerns were right, activists say. They expect more arrests and prosecutions to follow soon.

Many LGBTQ+ people in Senegal already lived in hiding before. The new laws make their situation even more dangerous now.

Some have tried to leave the country for safer places. Others stay but avoid any activities that might attract attention.

Human rights organizations continue to monitor the situation in Senegal. They document cases and provide support where possible safely.
