Idaho Governor Brad Little signed a new law on Friday, April 10. The law requires teachers, doctors, and childcare workers to tell parents within 72 hours if a child shows transgender identity.

The law is called the "Pediatric Secretive Transitions Parental Rights Act." It applies to all minors in Idaho schools and healthcare settings.

Under this law, teachers must report to parents if students use different pronouns. Healthcare workers must also inform parents if children discuss gender identity issues. Childcare workers have the same requirements.

The law requires reporting even when it might put the young person at risk. This includes situations where parents might not support their child's gender identity.

School staff, doctors, and childcare workers have 72 hours to contact parents. They must report any signs of transgender identity or gender questioning behavior.

The new law affects all public schools in Idaho. Private schools and healthcare facilities must also follow these rules.

Governor Little said the law protects parental rights in education and healthcare decisions. He believes parents should know about their children's gender identity discussions.

The law takes effect immediately after being signed. Idaho joins several other states with similar reporting requirements for transgender youth.

Some healthcare providers worry about patient privacy and safety concerns. They question how the law will affect doctor-patient relationships with minors.

The American Civil Liberties Union and other organizations are reviewing the law. They may challenge it in court over privacy and safety issues.

Idaho lawmakers passed the bill earlier this year with Republican support. Democrats opposed the legislation during legislative debates.
